2025 Field Research Project

Course Title: Web Dev Career Experience | Instructor: Robert Buchholz | Completion Date: May 19th, 2025

Overview

Throughout my job research in web development, I engaged in a range of interviews—from initial phone screenings and technical coding rounds to live project walkthroughs and behavioral assessments. These interviews were conducted with both startups and established tech firms, with a strong emphasis on frontend skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React), backend experience (Node.js, Express, database management), and problem-solving abilities.

Most Rewarding

My most rewarding interview was with a mid-sized e-commerce company. I was asked to build a real-time product listing page using React and integrate it with an API. Not only did this let me showcase my coding and UI/UX design strengths, but I also received valuable feedback from their lead developer. They appreciated my clean code, attention to responsiveness, and how I handled edge cases. Even though I didn’t ultimately take the offer, the experience boosted my confidence and refined my understanding of production-level expectations.

Most Disappointing

One of the more disappointing interviews occurred with a company that emphasized full-stack capabilities but focused entirely on obscure algorithm questions unrelated to the role. Despite preparing portfolio projects and demonstrating web development work, the technical round was purely theoretical and didn’t align with practical skills. This was frustrating as it didn’t reflect my actual value as a web developer.

Follow Up

I’ve had several follow-up interviews, mainly consisting of:

-Cultural fit interviews with team leads or HR

-Pair programming sessions to test collaborative coding

-Deeper dives into previous project decisions and tech stack rationale

I plan to continue follow-ups with a SaaS platform company where I’ve passed the second round and will be discussing system architecture and component scalability in the next stage.

Overall Experience & Personal Growth

Overall, the interview process has been a tremendous learning journey. It forced me to:

-Solidify my technical skills through hands-on challenges

-Improve my ability to articulate technical decisions clearly

-Build resilience in handling rejection and learning from it

-Enhance my GitHub portfolio and develop clean, reusable code

Beyond landing recommendations, this process has made me a sharper, more confident, and more intentional web developer.
